Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
1For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and time to throw away; 7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
I’ve been thinking about these very familiar words from Ecclesiastes a lot over the last few weeks. It has been my way of framing theologically and biblically what has been happening in my life and in the church. You have been in a season of saying good bye to Judith Sellers. What a wonderful ministry she has had here. She is a fine pastor and hers are big shoes to fill.
I love and respect Judith as you do.
Now, we enter together a new season—a season where you are welcoming two new pastors. I am so excited about coming to be pastor here, to work side by side with you as we seek to build God’s kingdom in our little corner of the world. I cannot wait to get to know you better, to hear your hopes and dreams, to feel God’s Spirit as it moves among us and as we together continue to discern where God is leading Schertz United Methodist Church.
Several months ago I bought and read a book about one woman’s faith journey. The book was fine, but the whole reason I bought it, and the reason I remember it, is still for the title: The Water Will Hold You. I love that title. It reminds me—and now all of us—that in baptism, we are marked and claimed by God. No matter what the season, the water will hold us and carry us through. In goodbyes and hellos, in old ways and new, in strangers and friends—in all that is before us, the water will hold us!
I cannot wait to see what God has in store!
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Linda
